NPP MLA’s boycotted State Executive Meeting in Manipur

NPP in Manipur Faces Internal Strife: A Deepening Divide

Internal Discord Within the Party

The National People’s Party (NPP) in Manipur is currently experiencing significant internal discord. In a striking display of dissent, none of the party’s seven MLAs attended a recent state executive meeting. This absence highlights a growing split over support for the BJP government led by Biren Singh.

The Political Landscape

While the BJP holds a majority in Manipur, it has been backing the NPP-led government in Meghalaya. This complex political landscape adds tension as the NPP‘s Manipur unit grapples with its identity and future direction.

Recent Developments

On Tuesday, the Manipur unit convened to address key issues following the indefinite postponement of a national executive meeting. This meeting was initially scheduled for October 5 in New Delhi. The postponement was announced by the party’s national president, Conrad K. Sangma, who also serves as the chief minister of Meghalaya.

During this crucial meeting, a senior NPP leader, who wished to remain anonymous, voiced concerns. He stated, “The NPP Manipur executive met again on Tuesday to discuss critical issues, including the party’s stance on the BJP“. Senior leaders like NPP national vice president Yumnam Joykumar and former MLA S Sobhachandra attended. However, the absence of all MLAs raised alarm bells within the party.

Dissatisfaction Among Members

Many party members expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of clarity regarding the postponed meeting. As ethnic tensions continue to simmer in the state, several leaders are urging the NPP leadership to reconsider its position in the Manipur government. They suggest that a withdrawal might be necessary to align with constituents’ sentiments.

Shifting Allegiances

In a surprising development, several NPP leaders have recently decided to join the Congress party. Notable figures, including former MLA L Jayantakumar Singh and Romen Singh, have switched allegiances. This signals a potential shift in the political landscape of Manipur.

Conclusion

The turmoil within the NPP reflects both the party’s internal struggles and the broader challenges faced by political entities in a region marked by ethnic strife. As this situation unfolds, the decisions made by NPP leaders will have significant implications for the party’s future and the political dynamics in Manipur.
