History & Achievements
History
For much of the period after independence, the Indian National Congress was the dominant political force in Assam. Several Congress leaders served as Chief Minister, and the party maintained a strong organisational presence across the state. The Assam government's official historical list records leaders including Gopinath Bordoloi, Bishnu Ram Medhi, Bimala Prasad Chaliha, Sarat Chandra Singha and Hiteswar Saikia among the state's former Chief Ministers. One of the most important turning points in Assam politics was the Assam Movement. Beginning in 1979, the movement was largely centred on demands concerning the identification and removal of illegal immigrants from electoral rolls and protection of the political and cultural identity of indigenous Assamese people. The movement continued for several years and culminated in the Assam Accord of 1985. The movement transformed electoral politics in Assam. Leaders associated with the movement formed the Assam Gana Parishad, which subsequently won the 1985 Assembly election and formed the government. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta became one of the most prominent regional political leaders in the state's history. Congress returned to power in 1991 and remained influential for the following decade. Tarun Gogoi became Chief Minister in 2001 and led Congress governments for 15 years, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister in Assam's history. The official Assam government record lists his tenure from 17 May 2001 to 24 May 2016. A major political shift occurred in 2016 when the BJP-led alliance defeated the Congress government. Sarbananda Sonowal became Chief Minister, marking the BJP's first government in Assam. In 2021, Himanta Biswa Sarma succeeded Sonowal as Chief Minister. Since then, the BJP has further consolidated its political position in the state.
