History
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was established with the formation of the state on 1 May 1960. The state has a bicameral legislature consisting of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. Maharashtra has traditionally been dominated by the Indian National Congress and later experienced strong competition between the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party. The state has witnessed several coalition governments and significant political realignments. The Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena formed governments at different periods, while the Congress and NCP also governed Maharashtra for several years. In 2019, the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. In 2022, Eknath Shinde became Chief Minister after a major political split in the Shiv Sena and formed a government with the BJP. Following the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election, the Mahayuti alliance formed the government. Devendra Fadnavis became Chief Minister on 5 December 2024. The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has 288 elected members.

Industrial Development: Maharashtra is one of India's leading industrial states, with major sectors including automobiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, engineering, textiles, electronics and manufacturing. Financial Centre: Mumbai is India's major financial and commercial centre and is home to important financial institutions, corporate headquarters and India's major stock exchanges. Information Technology: Pune, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and other cities have developed major IT, software, technology and startup ecosystems. Agriculture: Maharashtra is an important producer of sugarcane, cotton, soybeans, grapes, onions, oranges and other agricultural and horticultural products. Infrastructure: The state has invested heavily in roads, expressways, metro rail, airports, ports and urban transportation. Major infrastructure projects have strengthened connectivity between Mumbai, Pune and other regions. Transport: Mumbai's suburban railway network is one of the busiest urban rail systems in the world. Metro systems have also expanded across Mumbai and other major cities. Tourism: Maharashtra has a diverse tourism sector including the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, forts of the Maratha period, beaches, hill stations, religious sites and wildlife reserves. Cultural Heritage: Maharashtra has a rich cultural tradition including Marathi literature, theatre, cinema, folk arts, music and festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi. Maratha History: The state has a major historical connection with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha Empire. Numerous forts and historical sites across Maharashtra preserve this heritage. Education: Maharashtra has a large network of universities, colleges, technical institutions and research centres. Mumbai and Pune are major educational and research hubs. Cooperative Movement: Maharashtra has played a major role in India's cooperative movement, particularly in agriculture, sugar production, banking and rural development. Renewable Energy: The state has expanded solar and wind-energy generation and continues to develop renewable-energy infrastructure. Urban Development: Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Thane and Navi Mumbai have undergone extensive urban development and infrastructure expansion. Current Political Leadership: Devendra Fadnavis is the current Chief Minister of Maharashtra and belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has served as Chief Minister since 5 December 2024. The Maharashtra government currently operates under the Mahayuti alliance. Leader of Opposition: The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly currently has no officially recognised Leader of Opposition. Therefore, the Opposition Leader field should be entered as "Vacant" rather than assigning a specific person. The principal opposition grouping includes Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar).
