Punjab Political Row Intensifies After Harpal Singh Cheema Responds to Dalit Labourer’s Death

A political controversy has emerged in Punjab following the death of Dalit labourer Gulzar Singh, with Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema responding to allegations surrounding the case and opposition leaders demanding further action.
According to reports published on September 17, 2026, Gulzar Singh died after allegedly consuming poison. The case has attracted political attention after a video recorded before his death reportedly became part of the public discussion surrounding the incident.
Harpal Singh Cheema has rejected allegations against him and accused opposition parties of attempting to frame him. He has said that he has evidence to support his position but would wait for the ongoing investigation to reach its conclusions.
The opposition, including BJP MP Tarun Chugh, has demanded Cheema's resignation and called for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe. Chugh also met members of Gulzar Singh's family and said he would raise the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. These are opposition demands and should be distinguished from established findings of the investigation.
A Special Investigation Team is currently examining the circumstances surrounding Gulzar Singh's death. The investigation is expected to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine whether any criminal responsibility exists.
