History
The Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly is a unicameral legislature consisting of 90 elected members. The current Assembly is the sixth Legislative Assembly of Chhattisgarh. The state has 90 Assembly constituencies, including constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The first Assembly of Chhattisgarh was constituted after the creation of the state in 2000. Ajit Jogi became the first Chief Minister, leading the Congress government. His government faced the challenge of establishing new state institutions and developing an administrative structure separate from Madhya Pradesh. The 2003 Assembly election marked the beginning of a long period of BJP rule. The BJP won the election and Raman Singh became Chief Minister. Under his leadership, the BJP won the 2008 and 2013 Assembly elections as well. Raman Singh's 15-year tenure became one of the defining periods of Chhattisgarh's early political history. The BJP government focused on public distribution, food security, infrastructure, rural development, electricity and industrial growth. At the same time, issues relating to tribal rights, land, mining, displacement and Maoist violence remained important political and security concerns. The 2018 Assembly election brought a major political change. The Indian National Congress won a large majority, securing 68 of the 90 seats. Bhupesh Baghel became Chief Minister. His government placed considerable emphasis on agriculture and rural welfare, including policies aimed at supporting farmers and strengthening the rural economy. The 2023 Assembly election again changed the political balance. The BJP won 54 of the 90 seats, while Congress won 35 and the Gondwana Gantantra Party won one seat. The BJP therefore secured a clear majority and returned to power. The Election Commission's official statistical report records the BJP's 54 seats and Congress's 35 seats in the election. Following the election, Vishnu Deo Sai was selected as Chief Minister. Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma became Deputy Chief Ministers. Raman Singh, a former Chief Minister, became Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The official Assembly portal currently lists Raman Singh as Speaker, Vishnu Deo Sai as Chief Minister and Charan Das Mahant as Leader of the Opposition. Charan Das Mahant, a senior Congress leader, serves as the Leader of the Opposition. Congress remains the principal opposition party with 35 seats in the 90-member Assembly. The current Assembly is therefore characterised by a BJP majority government and a sizeable Congress opposition. The political contest between the two parties remains central to the state's political landscape.
