Rajasthan Civic Polls 2026: BJP Leads Ward Count as Independents Shape Local Politics

Rajasthan, September 16, 2026: The results of Rajasthan’s urban local-body elections have become a major focus of state-level Politics after thousands of ward results were declared across the state. The election covered 309 urban local bodies and 10,245 councillor seats, with the results showing significant competition between the BJP, Congress and independent candidates.

Of the 10,235 wards where results had been declared, the BJP won 4,179 wards, while Congress secured 3,613 and independent candidates won 2,273. Results in nine wards were held back because of electronic voting machine-related issues and repolling requirements.

The outcome has generated considerable discussion among Political Parties in Rajasthan because independent candidates have emerged as important players in several municipal bodies. In Bharatpur Municipal Corporation, independent candidates won 36 of the 65 wards, crossing the majority mark of 33. This has made them central to discussions about the formation of the civic administration.

Jaipur has also produced an interesting ward-level picture. In 19 urban local bodies across Jaipur district, the BJP won 311 of 690 wards, compared with 255 for Congress and 111 for independents. The vote totals between the BJP and Congress were extremely close in the district, highlighting differences between overall vote share and ward-level victories.

In Jodhpur, the BJP and Congress each won 44 wards in the 100-member municipal corporation, while independents won 11. One ward was pending because of an EVM-related issue, with repolling scheduled. The result has therefore left the final composition of the civic body dependent on the remaining process and subsequent political developments.

The results have also produced notable outcomes in individual districts. In Baran Municipal Council, the Aam Aadmi Party won 31 of 60 seats, while Congress won 18 and BJP secured nine. The result marks an important development for the party’s presence in Rajasthan’s local political landscape.

The Rajasthan civic elections have also triggered a fresh Political War over the interpretation of the results. Parties are examining ward-level performance, independent candidates and local issues while assessing what the results indicate about public sentiment. Different parties have offered different interpretations of the outcome, making the election an important subject of political debate.

The State Election Commission has also deferred mayoral and chairperson elections in four urban local bodies — Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota municipal corporations and Suket Municipality — where repolling is required. Elections for these posts are expected to take place after the remaining voting and counting process is completed.
