History
The Haryana Legislative Assembly is a unicameral legislature consisting of 90 elected members. The Assembly sits in Chandigarh and serves as the principal law-making institution of the state. The current Assembly is the 15th Haryana Legislative Assembly, elected in October 2024. The Assembly's term extends until 2029 unless dissolved earlier. Haryana's political history has been marked by intense competition among national and regional parties. The Indian National Congress dominated state politics during several periods after state formation and produced influential leaders such as Bansi Lal, Bhajan Lal and Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The state is also known for the phenomenon of political defections, which became nationally famous through the phrase "Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram", originating in Haryana during the late 1960s. The phrase became synonymous with frequent party switching and coalition instability. During the 1980s and 1990s, regional political formations such as Lok Dal, Haryana Vikas Party and Indian National Lok Dal emerged as influential forces. Leaders such as Devi Lal, Om Prakash Chautala and Bansi Lal played major roles in shaping the state's political direction. The Bharatiya Janata Party gradually expanded its presence and emerged as a dominant force in the state. In 2014, the BJP formed its first majority government in Haryana under Manohar Lal Khattar. The BJP retained power in 2019 through a coalition arrangement and again secured victory in the 2024 Assembly election. The 2024 Haryana Assembly election resulted in the BJP winning 48 seats, Congress winning 37 seats, and other parties and independents securing the remaining seats. The BJP subsequently formed the government under Nayab Singh Saini. The Congress remains the principal opposition party, and Bhupinder Singh Hooda serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Legislative Assembly. The official Haryana Vidhan Sabha website identifies him as the current Leader of Opposition. The state's politics is largely influenced by issues such as agriculture, employment, industrial growth, urbanization, reservation policies, education, sports development, law and order, infrastructure and relations with the National Capital Region.
