History
The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has a unicameral structure with 60 elected members. The state's first Legislative Assembly was constituted after Meghalaya attained statehood in 1972. Meghalaya has experienced governments led by the Indian National Congress, regional political parties and coalition formations. Regional parties have historically played an important role in the state's politics. The National People's Party (NPP) became the largest party after the 2023 Assembly election. Conrad K. Sangma continued as Chief Minister and formed the government with support from allied parties. The current government is led by the National People's Party. Conrad K. Sangma has served as Chief Minister since 6 March 2018 and began his second consecutive term in March 2023. The current Leader of the Opposition is Mukul Sangma of the All India Trinamool Congress.
Achievements
Education: Meghalaya has expanded access to schools, colleges and higher-education institutions across its hilly and rural regions. Tourism: Meghalaya is one of India's important nature-tourism destinations, known for its waterfalls, caves, living root bridges, forests and scenic landscapes. Natural Heritage: The state has extensive forests, biodiversity and unique ecological landscapes. Places such as Cherrapunji, Mawsynram and Nongriat are internationally recognised for their natural attractions. Living Root Bridges: Traditional living root bridges created by the Khasi and Jaintia communities represent an important example of indigenous ecological knowledge and sustainable construction. Caves: Meghalaya is famous for its extensive limestone cave systems and is considered one of the most important cave-exploration regions in India. Agriculture and Horticulture: Agriculture remains an important source of livelihood. The state produces crops including rice, maize, potatoes, oranges, pineapple, turmeric, ginger and other horticultural products. Organic and Sustainable Farming: Meghalaya has promoted organic farming, traditional agricultural practices and sustainable land-management initiatives. Handicrafts and Handlooms: Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities have rich traditions of weaving, bamboo crafts, cane work, woodcraft and other indigenous handicrafts. Music and Culture: Meghalaya has a vibrant music culture and is particularly known for rock music. Shillong is often described as one of India's major music centres. Tribal Heritage: The state has preserved distinctive Khasi, Jaintia and Garo traditions, languages, customs, festivals and traditional institutions. Wildlife Conservation: Meghalaya's forests provide habitats for numerous species of birds, mammals, reptiles and plants. The state has protected areas and wildlife sanctuaries supporting biodiversity conservation. Infrastructure: The state has expanded road connectivity, telecommunications, electricity access, educational infrastructure and public services to improve connectivity across its mountainous terrain. Current Political Leadership: Conrad K. Sangma is the current Chief Minister of Meghalaya. He is the president of the National People's Party (NPP) and has served as Chief Minister since 6 March 2018. He began his second consecutive term in March 2023. The official Meghalaya Government website lists Conrad K. Sangma as Chief Minister. Opposition: Mukul Sangma is the current Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. He represents the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and has held the position since August 2024.
