Gujarat Politics has entered another heated phase after a controversy broke out in the state Assembly over the rendition of Vande Mataram during the opening of the monsoon session. Congress MLA Imran Khedawala came under criticism from the BJP after he sat down during part of the national song while other legislators remained standing.
Vande Mataram Row Sparks Political Clash
The controversy began when Khedawala initially stood during the rendition of Vande Mataram but later took his seat. BJP leaders criticised the Congress MLA and demanded an apology, arguing that his action disrespected the national song and the established Assembly tradition.
The BJP has also questioned whether Khedawala's decision represented his personal position or reflected the wider stand of the Congress party.
Khedawala Defends His Position
Khedawala rejected the BJP's allegations and explained that he stood during the portions of Vande Mataram that have traditionally been sung. He said his decision to sit when additional lines were being sung was a personal position and maintained that it should not be interpreted as disrespect toward the country.
The Congress MLA also criticised what he described as attempts to issue certificates of patriotism through political statements.
Congress Responds to BJP Attack
The controversy has also exposed differences in the political interpretation of the incident. Congress leaders have rejected the allegation that Khedawala deliberately insulted Vande Mataram.
Congress whip Kirit Patel said Khedawala had stood during the rendition and disputed the BJP's version of events. The party has sought to portray the issue as a political controversy rather than an act of disrespect.
