Gujarat Politics: Opposition Pressure Mounts After Bhavnagar Hooch Tragedy
Gujarat politics is witnessing renewed confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress after the Bhavnagar hooch tragedy triggered questions over enforcement, public safety and government accountability.
Congress MLAs staged a protest at the Gujarat Assembly in Gandhinagar, demanding the resignation of the state home minister. The opposition accused the government of failing to effectively control illegal liquor and drug networks and called for stronger action against those involved in illicit trade.
Bhavnagar Tragedy Becomes a Political Issue
The tragedy has become a major political issue because Gujarat has a prohibition framework, making enforcement against illegal liquor particularly significant. The National Human Rights Commission had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of reports that at least nine people died and 39 others were critically hospitalised after consuming suspected spurious liquor in Bhavnagar district. The NHRC sought information from the Gujarat Chief Secretary and Director General of Police regarding the investigation, relief measures and steps to prevent similar incidents.
For the Congress, the incident has provided an opportunity to raise wider questions about law and order and the effectiveness of the state's prohibition enforcement system. The protest at the Assembly was intended to keep the issue at the centre of legislative and public debate.
BJP-Congress Political Battle Intensifies
The latest controversy comes at a time when Gujarat's Assembly session is witnessing several political disputes. The monsoon session of the 15th Gujarat Legislative Assembly is scheduled from September 9 to September 11, 2026.
The opposition has been raising issues including farmers' concerns, crop losses and prices, while the ruling BJP has also attacked Congress over a separate controversy involving Congress MLA Imran Khedawala and the rendition of Vande Mataram in the Assembly. The BJP has sought action against the MLA, while Congress leaders have clarified that his conduct does not represent the party's official position.
