Tamil Nadu Political Row Intensifies as Vijay and Stalin Clash Over Assembly Remarks
Chennai, September 11, 2026: Political tensions in Tamil Nadu have intensified following a heated exchange in the state Assembly between Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin. The confrontation has added another chapter to the increasingly competitive political environment in the state.
The dispute followed remarks made by Vijay during an Assembly discussion, after which DMK legislators objected to his statements and staged a protest. The episode has since developed into a wider political confrontation between the ruling TVK and the DMK.
Vijay Faces Opposition Criticism
During the Assembly session, Chief Minister Vijay levelled allegations against the previous DMK government, including claims concerning alleged corruption and party funding. He referred to allegations associated with Enforcement Directorate investigations involving senior DMK leaders.
The remarks drew a strong response from Udhayanidhi Stalin, who criticised the Chief Minister's presentation and accused him of avoiding substantive answers to questions raised by the Opposition.

DMK MLAs Stage Protest
The Assembly proceedings became tense when DMK legislators staged a protest demanding an opportunity to respond to the Chief Minister's remarks.
According to reports, the Speaker did not permit the Opposition to immediately respond, following which DMK MLAs staged a dharna and were subsequently marshalled out of the House.

Controversy Over Vijay's Gesture
Another point of controversy involved a gesture made by Vijay during his Assembly speech.
The gesture was interpreted by political opponents as a reference to former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and events associated with the Emergency period. Vijay later clarified that the body language was inadvertent and said it was not intended to personally insult anyone.
