History
Founded 19 June 1966 by cartoonist Bal Thackeray, championing Marathi identity before evolving into a Hindu-nationalist BJP ally. Split in June 2022 when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray; the EC recognized Shinde's faction as the official Shiv Sena in 2023.
Achievements
Led Maharashtra's government from 2019-2022 for the first time under one of its own leaders. As of 2026, Shinde's Shiv Sena is in power in the ruling Mahayuti alliance; Uddhav's Shiv Sena (UBT) is in opposition.
