History
Jharkhand has a unicameral Legislative Assembly with 81 seats. Since its creation in 2000, the state has experienced considerable political competition and several changes of government. The first political phase after statehood was dominated by coalition politics. The BJP emerged as an important force in the newly created state, while regional parties, particularly the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), played a major role in representing regional and tribal interests. Babulal Marandi, a senior BJP leader, became the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand after statehood. His government focused on establishing the administrative institutions of the new state. Over the following years, however, Jharkhand experienced considerable political instability, with changes in Chief Ministers and coalition arrangements. The JMM gradually strengthened its position as one of Jharkhand's most influential regional parties. Shibu Soren played a central role in the development of the JMM and the wider Jharkhand statehood movement. His political legacy later continued through his son, Hemant Soren. The state has alternated between governments led by the BJP and alliances involving the JMM and Congress. Political competition has frequently revolved around tribal rights, land acquisition, mining, employment, welfare, development and the distribution of natural-resource revenues.
Achievements
The Jharkhand government under Hemant Soren has highlighted initiatives in education, employment, agriculture, healthcare, drinking water, rural development and social welfare. Education and Employment The government has promoted Schools of Excellence and educational initiatives aimed at improving school infrastructure and learning opportunities. The state has also implemented scholarship programmes, including the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship, to support students pursuing higher education abroad. The government has also promoted the Mukhyamantri Rojgar Srijan Yojana, which provides financial assistance and subsidised loans to encourage self-employment and entrepreneurship. In 2026, the government also reviewed higher and technical education programmes, including the Guruji Student Credit Card Scheme, scholarships and online education initiatives. A Jharkhand Robotics Festival was also highlighted as an initiative to encourage students to develop skills in AI and robotics.
